A Legacy of Strength, Hidden in Plain Sight

Did you know that one of the first documented lesbian couples in American history, Sarah Ponsonby and Eleanor Butler—aka the "Ladies of Llangollen"—lived together in 18th-century Ireland and were celebrated as eccentric intellectuals, but their romantic relationship was quietly ignored by society? Their story is rarely taught in schools, yet their defiance of traditional norms and lifelong commitment is a timeless emblem of queer love.
